Post Graduate Work Permit

After you graduate from your program of studies from a designated learning institution (DLI), you may be able to work temporarily.

You need a work permit to work in Canada after you graduate. The minimum length of your study permit must be alteast 8 months to be eligible for PGWP. You have 180 days after you get you final marks to apply for a PGWP. PGWP validation depends on the length of your study program.

Employer Specific Work Permit

A type of work permit that indicates:

• the name of the employer a person can work for,
• how long a person can work, and
• the location where a person can work (if applicable).

A person who holds this type of work permit can only work for the employer for the length of time specified, and if applicable, at the location shown on the permit.

Your employer must get a positive Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) before you submit your application. An LMIA is a document from Employment and Social Development Canada/Service Canada that allows an employer to hire a foreign worker through the Temporary Foreign Worker Program (TFWP)

Open Work Permit

A type of work permit that indicates:

An open work permit allows you to work for any employer in Canada, except for an employer

  • who is listed as ineligible on the list of employers who have failed to comply with the conditions or
  • who regularly offers striptease, erotic dance, escort services or erotic massages
You must also meet additional criteria to be eligible for an open work permit.
